Why this tool
- It will not clip. It stops just short of the point where the sound would break up, and tells you when it did.
- It matches how loud things sound. Loudness is measured the way broadcasters do it (LUFS), so different recordings end up sounding equally loud.
- Nothing is uploaded. The work happens inside your browser.
- No install and no account.
How to use it
- Drop an audio file in, or click to choose one.
- Pick "Match how loud it sounds" or "Turn it up as far as it goes".
- Press "Adjust the volume", listen to check, then download.
Questions
Is my audio uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, and this site has no way to receive your file.
Can I check for myself that nothing is uploaded?
Yes. Open this page, then disconnect from the internet. With the connection off, you can still choose a file and save the result.
For the first few seconds after the page opens, it is still fetching the parts it needs, so wait a moment before disconnecting. Reloading the page needs the connection again.
Note that some of the other tools on this site fetch extra parts after reading your file — for example, the character tables needed to show a PDF that does not embed its fonts. If you have a data-saving setting turned on, nothing is fetched ahead of time either, so a connection is needed then too.
What is the difference between the two modes?
Match how loud it sounds brings perceived loudness to a target, so different recordings end up sounding equally loud. Use this when you want several files at the same level.
Turn it up as far as it goes lifts the loudest point to just under the ceiling. Good when you have one quiet recording and simply want it louder.
Will it clip?
No. The loudest point never goes above -1 dB. When reaching the target would clip — which happens with percussive material such as drums or applause — it stops short and says so.
What is LUFS?
A unit for how loud something sounds to a person, with corrections for the fact that low frequencies are harder to hear. Two files can have the same peak and still sound nothing alike, which is why matching peaks does not make things sound even. As a guide, streaming sits around -14 LUFS and broadcast around -23 LUFS.
Does the quality drop?
Save as WAV or FLAC and nothing changes except the volume. Choosing a compressed format costs a little quality — and if the original was already an MP3, saving it again loses a bit more.
How do I make several files equally loud?
Do them one at a time with the same target loudness. They will line up when you play them back to back.
Can I change the volume of a video?
Pull the sound out first with Extract audio, then level it here.
Can I cut the silence?
Trim audio cuts the unwanted head and tail.
How much can I use for free? Are there limits?
Every feature, as many times as you like. There is no daily cap, nothing changes if you sign up, and you will never be asked to pay later.
There is a limit on file size, but it comes from what a browser can handle at once. The work runs on your own device, so there is nothing for us to meter. The exact figures are in the other answers on this page.
Does this work on a phone?
Yes. Please keep the following in mind.
- Long audio can stop partway. About an hour is the rough limit. A computer has more room.
- Keep this page open while it works. Switching to another app stops it.
- Some formats, such as Opus, cannot be made on an iPhone. Choose another format if it fails.
- Saved files go to the Files app. To put them in Photos, use "Share" next to the download button.
