Questions
Is my video uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, and this site has no way to receive your video.
Can I check for myself that nothing is uploaded?
Yes. Open this page, then disconnect from the internet. With the connection off, you can still choose a file and save the result.
For the first few seconds after the page opens, it is still fetching the parts it needs, so wait a moment before disconnecting. Reloading the page needs the connection again.
Note that some of the other tools on this site fetch extra parts after reading your file — for example, the character tables needed to show a PDF that does not embed its fonts. If you have a data-saving setting turned on, nothing is fetched ahead of time either, so a connection is needed then too.
PNG or JPEG?
PNG for anything with text or diagrams — nothing is lost, so thin lines stay crisp.JPEG for photographic scenes — it looks much the same and the file is far smaller.
How is this different from a screenshot?
A screenshot captures the video at the size it is playing on screen. This tool takes the frame from the video itself, so you get it at full resolution, with no playback bar or mouse cursor in the way.
Which videos are supported?
Anything your browser can play — MP4, MOV, WebM and so on. If your file will not play, convert it to MP4 first with the video converter.
Stepping does not seem to move exactly one frame
Some videos do not space their frames evenly, so the step size and the real frames may not line up perfectly. If you overshoot, step back once in the other direction.
What about portrait videos?
They work. The frame is taken as it is played, so a portrait video stays portrait.
Can I export every frame?
This tool is for picking frames one at a time. To keep the motion, a GIF is usually what you want.
How much can I use for free? Are there limits?
Every feature, as many times as you like. There is no daily cap, nothing changes if you sign up, and you will never be asked to pay later.
There is a limit on file size, but it comes from what a browser can handle at once. The work runs on your own device, so there is nothing for us to meter. The exact figures are in the other answers on this page.
Does this work on a phone?
Yes. Please keep the following in mind.
- Large videos can stop partway. A few hundred MB is the rough limit. A computer has more room.
- Keep this page open while it works. Switching to another app stops it.
- Saved files go to the Files app. To put them in Photos, use "Share" next to the download button.
