Questions
Is my video uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, and this site has no way to receive your video.
Can I check for myself that nothing is uploaded?
Yes. Open this page, then disconnect from the internet. With the connection off, you can still choose a file and save the result.
For the first few seconds after the page opens, it is still fetching the parts it needs, so wait a moment before disconnecting. Reloading the page needs the connection again.
Note that some of the other tools on this site fetch extra parts after reading your file — for example, the character tables needed to show a PDF that does not embed its fonts. If you have a data-saving setting turned on, nothing is fetched ahead of time either, so a connection is needed then too.
Does the quality drop?
No. This tool does not re-encode the picture. The original video data is copied into a new container and the audio is simply left out, so the picture is bit-for-bit identical.
How is this different from turning the volume down?
A video with the volume at zero still contains the audio. This tool removes the audio itself, so nothing can be recovered by turning the volume up — and the file gets smaller.
How much smaller does the file get?
Smaller by the size of the audio — a few MB for a ten-minute video. To make it much smaller, use Compress video.
What about portrait videos?
They are fine. The orientation is copied across too, so portrait stays portrait.
Can I keep the audio separately?
Save it first with Extract audio, then remove the sound here.
Which formats are supported?
MP4 and MOV, with H.264 or H.265 video. The result is an MP4. To change the format, use the video converter.
How much can I use for free? Are there limits?
Every feature, as many times as you like. There is no daily cap, nothing changes if you sign up, and you will never be asked to pay later.
There is a limit on file size, but it comes from what a browser can handle at once. The work runs on your own device, so there is nothing for us to meter. The exact figures are in the other answers on this page.
Does this work on a phone?
Yes. Please keep the following in mind.
- Large videos can stop partway. A few hundred MB is the rough limit. A computer has more room.
- Keep this page open while it works. Switching to another app stops it.
- Some formats, such as AV1, cannot be made on an iPhone. Choose another format if it fails.
- Saved files go to the Files app. To put them in Photos, use "Share" next to the download button.
