Extract MP3 from MP4
This page opens with MP3 already selected. Drop a video in and keep just its sound. Everything happens inside your browser, so your file is never uploaded.

What people use this for
- Listening back to a recorded meeting or lecture. Audio only is far smaller, so it fits on a phone for the commute.
- Sending audio to a transcription service. Many of them accept audio files only.
- Keeping the sound of a performance you filmed.
MP3 or "copy as-is"?
The audio inside an MP4 is usually AAC. Choosing MP3 re-encodes it, which loses a little quality. Decide like this:
- Choose MP3 when the person or device you are sending it to only takes MP3. It plays almost everywhere.
- Choose "copy as-is" when you want the sound untouched: load the video, then switch "Output format" to M4A. If the original audio is AAC, "Copy as-is (no conversion)" appears under Quality. You get an .m4a file in seconds, with the sound unchanged.
Either way the picture is discarded and only the sound is kept. Your original video is not modified.
Which bitrate
- Meetings, lectures, interviews: 128 kbps — about 60 MB per hour.
- Music and performances: 192 kbps or more. If the video's own audio is lower than that, a higher value will not help.
- Once the video is loaded, the page shows the original audio's format, channels and sample rate. The format appears as a code such as
mp4a.40.2, which means AAC. The original bitrate is not shown, so use 192 kbps for music.
Questions
How large a video can I use?
Up to 2 GB, which covers most hour-long recordings. The resulting audio file is much smaller than the video.
Does it work with MOV?
Yes — MP4 and MOV are supported. WebM and MKV are not.
How long does it take?
"Copy as-is" takes a few seconds. Converting to MP3 takes about 1–2 minutes for an hour of video, depending on your computer.
Can I extract only part of the video?
This page extracts all of it. To keep a section, extract first and then cut it withTrim audio.
For M4A, WAV, FLAC or Opus instead, just change "Output format" above; the full description of the tool is onExtract audio. To convert between audio formats, see Convert audio.
