Convert MOV to MP4

When MOV causes trouble

• It will not play on a Windows PC — common when the MOV holds HEVC video.
• An Android user cannot open it.
• A site or form requires MP4 — school or work submissions, upload forms, some video sites.

Converting to MP4 (H.264) makes the file play on practically any computer, phone or video site.

What happens to the picture

• The video is re-encoded, so it cannot look better than the original. Quality is High, Normal or Smaller file.
• Pick High to stay close to the original. The file may end up a similar size, or slightly larger.
• Pick "Smaller file", or set Resolution to 1080p or 720p, if you need a smaller file.
• When you convert to MP4 and the sound is already AAC — as it usually is in a MOV — it is copied across untouched; anything else is re-encoded to AAC, and audio your browser cannot read is left out (the page tells you). If you only need the audio, use Extract audio.

About videos shot in portrait

A portrait video from an iPhone is stored sideways with a "rotate when playing" flag. This tool reads that flag and writes the file the way you see it, so your video will not come out on its side.
